Post-conference

The second annual Student Equity in Higher Education national conference was held in Melbourne, 11-12 October 2010. Papers, PowerPoint presentations and other useful content may now be found on equity101 (see www.equity101.info/content/2nd-Annual-Student-Equity-Higher-Education-National-Conference-0.

Context

The provision of more equitable higher education has become a leading priority for governments, both nationally and internationally. Institutions are now seeking to engage cohorts of students who have not traditionally considered university pathways, creating new flows of students across geographic and social class borders. New student bodies will bring different knowledge and cultural experiences into classrooms and lecture theatres, placing demands on institutions to broaden curricula, pedagogies and research agendas.

Event

It was organised around the theme: Aspiration, Mobility and Voice. It provided a forum for those with an interest in student equity in higher education to engage in substantive discussions about these concepts. It included keynote addresses from international speakers, panel sessions that engaged in dialogue across research, policy and practice, presentations from leading researchers, roundtable discussions (which employed online blogging technologies, see www.equity101.info) and skill-building workshops.
